1) Use only 2-3 different box sizes
Before you begin putting your items into boxes, try to get a plan put together. Just use two or three different size boxes. The reason being is simple.
When you’ve only got two or three box sizes, it’s easier to stack on top of each other. You’ll be able to find space predictably and make the most out of what area you have.
2) Gain access to an organized layout
An organizational strategy is critical when it comes to having a self-storage unit. But how do you go about organizing a storage unit when you’ve got nothing but boxes going in there? It’s easy. Purchase storage racks.
With storage racks, you gain the upper hand regarding the organization. Depending on the size of your unit, you can create one or two aisles to walk down. This gives you easy access to items at both the front and back of your unit.
3) Split your storage unit up into rooms
After you’ve organized your storage unit with storage racks, take it up a notch by dedicating areas for individual rooms in the house. For instance, you can assign one corner of the storage unit for bedrooms items, the other for a kitchen appliance, and so on.
Once the rooms are split up, grab some scotch tape or a marker and label where everything is at so you don’t forget.
4) Place your heaviest item at the bottom, and your lightest at the top
It may seem like common sense, but many folks forget to place they’re heaviest items at the bottom when they organize their self-storage unit. Doing so will accomplish a couple of things.
First off, an unbalanced stack of boxes will quickly come tumbling down. Secondly, your back will appreciate it when it comes moving time because you can quickly move the heavy stuff with a dolly – trust us!

5) Place heavy items in small boxes
When it comes to heavy things, it’s easy to consider placing them in large boxes. Don’t do this! Place them in smaller boxes, instead. Doing so will make the moving day much more manageable. After all, it’s much easier to move small heavy items over large ones!
