If you are a reader then you know books become so much more than words on a page. They become a transportation device to take you on adventures to new lands; novels introduce you to stories of love, bravery and so much more. That is why after you finish a book it can be hard to get rid of it. Depending on the size of your home as your book collection grows you may find that you need to put some of the books in self storage.
Storing books is a great way to keep them in the family and revisit them at another time. If not appropriately stored books can fall prey to heat, humidity, bugs and more.
Three Tips For Storing Your Books
Use Plastic Storage Containers
Cardboard is extremely vulnerable. One bad leak can ruin the box and your books. Using plastic containers is a great way to store books because they are sturdy and keep water and pests out. “Book bugs” isn’t just a cute name for children who read a lot. Silverfish, cockroach, termites, and book lice all eat paper. Sealed plastic containers will help protect your books from outside elements and the dangers of being bug food.
Don’t Overpack Them
It can be tempting to put as many books as possible into the container as you can. However, this can damage them. Too much weight can break down the fibers of the cover and cause them to bleed into each other. Fit the books into the container comfortably, don’t force them to fit.
Store In a Climate Control Facility
Humidity can wreak havoc on books. The same way water can damage the pages and cover so can humidity. While your plastic container will provide some protection from heat and moisture in warm temperatures, it may not be enough to keep your books in pristine condition.
