A 5×10 storage unit doesn’t sound like it would fit a lot. If you pack your belongings properly, however, you can fit a ton in this small space. A 5×10 unit is about the size of a small, walk-in closet. Ideally, you would be able to fit a queen-sized bed, a dresser, TV, and several medium-sized boxes.
We have a tool on our website called the storage calculator. You are able to choose what kind of furniture and larger-sized items you have, so you can see which unit would best fit your needs. This tool will help you digitally plan out what will fit in your storage unit.
Here are some tips on how to properly package your belongings in a storage unit.
How to Maximize Your Space
When packing a storage unit, it is best to put your heaviest boxes on the bottom and continue to stack up. Your lightest items would go on top, of course. Make sure to create a walkway if you put these near the back so it is easy to access your belongings. It is also a good idea to use some sort of shelving in your storage unit. You can use a standing shelf to help organize heavy or oddly shaped items.
Organize By Priority
Items that are used more regularly should be stored at the front of your storage unit. It really depends on how often you’re pulling items out of storage. If you never touch the items in your unit, you might want to keep stuff like Christmas decorations near the front. If you regularly pull things from storage, you’ll want to move those out-of-season items to the back and out of the way.
Labels will make finding what you’re looking for a whole lot easier. Try to keep the label names as descriptive as possible. For example, don’t use the term “clothes.” Instead, say exactly what kind of clothes are in that box. Use labels such as winter coats, scarves, gloves and so on. This will also keep you more organized.
