The items that should not be left in a storage unit may seem obvious, but many people do not fully understand the potential consequences of leaving certain items in a storage space. Noah’s Ark Self Storage is here to give you helpful tips before leaving your valuable items in storage.
Here are four things that aren’t allowed in a self storage unit.
Anything Living
As silly as it might sound, there are instances where people and pets are either left or choose to stay in a storage space. Under no circumstance is this allowed for any living thing.
This includes people. Many storage facilities deal with people trying to live out of storage units so they do not have to pay for air conditioning, electricity and water.
Also, live plants cannot be kept in a storage unit. They will die faster in such an environment as they need sun, water and nutrients to survive. A dark, dry space will not do the trick.
Food Storage
Food will attract pests such as insects, lizards, mice and snakes, not only into your unit, but other units as well. Food also has a higher probability of going bad and expiring when stored away.
Firearms & Explosives
No firearms, gunpowder, fireworks or any kind of explosives are allowed inside your storage space. This is to avoid an explosion that can not only destroy the storage facility, but also others’ valuable items.
Waste & Hazardous Materials
Any flammables, explosives and radioactive items are never allowed inside a storage unit. If any product is considered corrosive, chemical, odorous or toxic then it is also not permitted for storage. Some of the most popular, prohibited items that have attempted to be stored include:
- Lead paint
- Asbestos
- Urea formaldehyde
- Polychlorinated biphenyl
- Petroleum products
Again, this is to prevent any potential explosions or accidents from happening that could put you in trouble with the law.
Other Items For Consideration
There are probably other items you are wondering whether to put in a storage space or not. Many items are allowed in self storage, but it is recommended for them to be kept in a climate-controlled environment. Such items might be damaged by the harsh heat if placed in one of our units that isn’t temperature-controlled.
At Noah’s Ark Self Storage, we want to ensure you are certain about each item you are placing in storage and trusting with us. Here are the items we suggest placing in climate-controlled storage:
- Leathers, furs and clothing
- Paintings
- Film and photographs
- Furniture
- Antiques
- Musical instruments
- Wine
- Important or legal documents
- Software, DVDs, CDs and electronics
If an item is money-related, keep it. Currencies, like cash, checks, coins, gold and other types of money do not belong in a storage unit. Currency is much safer in the bank.
Check Other Rules Before Storage
Always read the extensive rules and regulations for every storage facility you choose to store your items. At Noah’s Ark Self Storage, we guarantee a safe, climate-controlled storage for your valuables. We ask you to always keep in mind the type of items being kept in your unit.
